Interior Trends: Color
The advice that
I am most often asked for is color selection. Most people's fear
of choosing color comes from the instinct that color effects how we
"feel". We all want our homes to make us feel good so finding
the color(s) that make this happen can be very frustrating to many.
Color selection is more than just liking the paint color. Along with a client's own color preferences, these are some of the factors I take into consideration when I select paint color:
- Primary function, size and proportion of the space
- Light sources & the quality of light
- Sun orientation and shadowing effects
- Texture of walls & trim
- All architectural colors ( flooring, ceiling & adjacent room colors )
- Color of items to be layered on top of wall color (fabrics & furniture)
- Sheen of paint and its degree of reflectivity
Of these, lighting
can be most tricky since it can cast a contrary hue over everything,
changing how we perceive the colors individually and collectively, but
more importantly- how we feel in a space. Color and Light go
hand in hand.
A well planned color scheme that flows from room to room is the base layer to a finished design.
